We shared the news that a major hotel chain is eyeing expansion in Carlisle.

Premier Inn, which currently has four sites in Carlisle, has ‘identified’ the city, which is currently undergoing major regeneration projects, as somewhere they would like to ‘strengthen’ their presence.

In May this year, the owner of the hotel chain, Dominic Paul, Whitbread chief executive, announced plans to axe 1,500 jobs at its pubs and restaurants around the UK as it seeks to expand its hotel offering.

At the time it was reported that Whitbread, the hotel’s parent company, wants to sell 126 restaurants which includes brands such as Brewers Fayre and Beefeater.

Here's what readers thought.

Matt J Rayson pointed out Fisher Street's Cumberland Building Society is closing in October. "The building is huge and has a massive upstairs. This coming to the historic Quarter would make a huge difference for that part of the city," he said.

Martin Harkins disagreed, commenting: "Another budget hotel, rather see a Hilton or other brand have a site."

David Eyley said: "The vacant Debenhams building would be ideal. Still quite modern, with all the services, and it's own car park too."

One web user said: "The Cumberland Building Society on Fisher Street would be ideal. The basement could be an underground car park also."

Les Youlden was sceptical. He said: "Question is, do we want a fifth Premier Inn, in Carlisle."
