In the recent Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Lord David Cameron was announced as the new foreign secretary.

Lord Cameron was Prime Minister for six years from May 2010 until July 2016 – he previously sat in the House of Commons for 15 years, including five years as leader of the opposition.

On Monday (November 20), Lord Cameron made his first appearance in the House of Lords.

Speaking at the Global Food Security Summit, the 57-year-old said: “I’ve had an extraordinary day going to the House of Lords, taking the oath and all the rest of it.”

He joked: “So, I’ll go home and tell Mrs Cameron she’s now Lady Cameron. She’s absolutely furious about that.”

Why has David Cameron been made a Lord?

It was revealed last week that he had been elevated to the Lords as a life peer to allow him to serve in Sunak’s Cabinet after he resigned as an MP in 2016.

The former Prime Minister will now be known as Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton after his official introduction, the name reflecting his long-held ties to the Cotswolds town in his former constituency, Witney.

In the House of Lords yesterday, Lord Cameron wore the traditional scarlet robes for the short ceremony as he swore the oath of allegiance to the King.

He read the traditional oath: “I, David, Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton, do swear by almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to his majesty King Charles, his heirs and successors, according to law, so help me God.”
