WE shared the news that work has officially started on Carlisle's southern entrance to create a more vibrant area with road closures and bus route changes set to take place in the future.

Cumberland Council is working with Story Contracting to improve the area around English Street to make it more attractive for residents, businesses, and visitors.

The Carlisle Southern Gateway is part of Cumberland Council's regeneration project for key parts of the city.

Four of the five bus shelters on English street have been removed but the Denton Holme stop will remain for the next couple of weeks.

Here's what readers thought.

Stuart Curtis said he would like to see a leisure centre with a 'family pool with slides' or an ice rink instead.

Neil Pod Pearson said: "It needs improved, the place is dead."

Lisa Swan-Fletcher said: "No one in Carlisle actually cares," and Avril Richards said: "We are a takeaway city with little else for the majority of families."

Stuart Goodman added: "Vibrant always means spending millions," while Grant Didsbury commented: "Just another way to increase congestion and put people off from going into town in the first place."

Dzintra Harman said: "Give us something we need, like shops and places to see."
