WE shared the news that plans for a new Greggs at the site of a former doctor's surgery in Carlisle could create 12 new jobs if approved by the council.

The site was formerly Eastern Way Surgery which closed in 2022 as South Carlisle Health Care amalgamated services from Brunswick House, Eastern Way and Arnside House.

In June, it was revealed the fast-food outlet lodged an application to repurpose the former Harraby surgery building on Eastern Way and London Road.

Here's what readers thought.

Andrea Templeton said: "Don't we have enough fast food places in Carlisle, we need more dentists, more drop-in surgeries for families struggling, more community-based foundations that will actually help families, these food shops are just getting out of hand now."

Carole Atkinson said: "Better than it standing empty and crumbling away plus a few more jobs this end of town."

Neil Armstrong said: "There are too many fast food chains in Carlisle when they can make something useful."

Claire Wilcox commented the development will affect good businesses that have worked hard to build their customer base.

"Twelve jobs is an extremely low number of jobs to bring when it more than likely will close good business," she added.

Julie Shannan added: "I like Greggs but could have been put to better use."

Rosemary Hastie asked: "There is a bakery in Harraby, why do we need another one?"

Neal Fisher said: "Not in objection to another Greggs closer to me but that's the totally wrong place. Far too busy a junction."
