WE shared the news that as work is completed on Carlisle’s Devonshire Street, the next project in the city’s regeneration plan is set to commence.
Over £80 million of public funding, from various sources, is anticipated to be invested in projects throughout Carlisle city centre, with an intention to revitalise the city.
This month (August), construction is due to start on the Market Square and Greenmarket Regeneration Project.
The multi-million-pound venture aims to remodel the 6,000-square-metre space, to generate a more appealing area for the city centre.
Here's what readers thought.
Babs Drinkwater said: "Why is everyone so hung up on shops? Cafes, bars and restaurants are also local businesses, so it’s great to support them. Times are changing and we need to move with it. People fundamentally shop online, the reason why so many shops have closed down all over the country."
Eddie Dawson said: "Brilliant news, really pleased that improving the city centre is always on the agenda," and Carla Hutchison added: "Wonderful to see so much happening and so many planning applications posted in shop windows."
One web user said: "Kudos to the people in charge for getting this started, must've been frustrating sorting it all out. I am looking forward to seeing how this all looks, I just hope they re-pave the whole city centre throughout to go with the improvements."
Another said: "Good stuff all round."
Others felt the money could have been better spent by opening shops or repairing potholes.
