WE shared the news that work has begun on the multi-million-pound Market Square and Greenmarket Regeneration Project in Carlisle.

The aim of the project, boosted by central government investment, will be to transform the city centre's 6,000-square-metre space into an attractive destination for both locals and visitors, including a revamped area to serve as a unique 'multifunctional events space'.

On Monday (August 12), site offices and welfare facilities were set up on Castle Street whilst site engineers and surveyors carried out final checks of the site.

Our readers responded to the work beginning.

Yvonne Park said: "Shops are what we need and somewhere decent for parents to take kids without it costing a fortune."

Morgan Freemanlamb said: "The moaners say the centre is empty or boarded up, every city and town centre is struggling, it’s not unique to Carlisle. Stop moaning, be positive for once and get behind Carlisle."

Ian Green said he liked the improvements, while Keith Cross Winds Cartwright said: "Money might have been better allocated to the market hall and promoting local businesses."

Kendall-Jane Devlin added: "You can make the town centre beautiful but it will be no good without shops. More and more are closing with nothing to replace them."

Tony Kesterton commented: "A play area to keep the kids entertained would be nice," and Sarah Maitland said: "What's needed is cheaper rents to encourage local businesses back into the town centre so we have some decent shops and a reason to come into town."
