Having secured their spot in the SGB Championship play-offs, Comets now face a pair of home meetings which could see them into the final of the Championship Shield and the semi-finals of the Knockout Cup.
Comets need only avoid defeat against Newcastle at Derwent Park tonight (7.30pm start) to progress in the cup to a semi-final against Edinburgh after they won 50-40 at Brough Park in the first leg.
Then, after a first-leg draw, a win by any margin at home to Scunthorpe tomorrow (7pm start) will put Comets into the final of the shield, where they would face Peterborough or Lakeside.
Team manager Tony Jackson said: “They’re all big meetings at this point.
“We’ve done well in the away legs but there’s no room for complacency so we’ll approach it like we would any other match; to win.
“A win against Scunthorpe would put us in our first final since 2010.
“These competitions have understandably taken a backseat in recent weeks as we endeavoured to get into the play-offs.
“Now, we can focus our attention on them.”
They will be boosted in their efforts by the return of skipper Ty Proctor, who is expected to be back in the side after missing the team’s last five meetings due to an injury sustained in the Championship Riders’ Individual at Sheffield on September 2.
The Comets will again use a guest for the injured Dan Bewley, with Aaron Summers coming in tonight against the Diamonds after thriving against Redcar two weeks ago while Ben Barker will step in tomorrow against the Scorpions.
