Another cup final is in the club’s sights this weekend when they take on Edinburgh home and away in the Knockout Cup semi-finals and team manager Tony Jackson hopes the town will turn out in numbers to get behind his riders, who have fought all year to stay in the hunt for major silverware.
Comets head to Edinburgh tonight (7.30pm start) before hosting the Monarchs tomorrow at Derwent Park (7pm start) looking for big performances like last weekend which fired them into the Championship Shield final.
Jackson said: "People have been saying they wanted to see a good team which could win something. Well, we’ve got a good team, the racing has been first-class, and we’re battling for all the silverware.
"We’ve kept our side of the bargain, so we need the fans to come down and support us.
“If they won’t support us now, when are they going to?
“We want to get as many people as we can down to Derwent Park.
“The more fans come down, the better the atmosphere there is and that helps the lads as we look to bring some trophies to the town.”
Jackson expects tonight’s visit to Armadale to be challenging and admitted there is an element of the unknown which will be decided by track conditions.
Comets have already beaten Edinburgh on their own track this season but were also hammered there last month so the Workington boss is simply hoping to see his side scrap for every point.
He said: “They’ve only got this to focus on so they’ll throw everything at it.
“I would like to think, with the weather changing and them having their confidence knocked by Berwick the other weekend, that they aren’t quite on the roll they were.
"Whatever points we get in the first leg, I’ll still want more but, obviously, with these two-legged ties it’s a race to 90 points.”
Ex-Workington fan favourite Kevin Doolan will stand in for injured Maryport rider Dan Bewley at Edinburgh tonight, while Jake Allen has been booked for tomorrow after his impressive showing for Scunthorpe at Derwent Park last weekend.
Jackson added: “Kevin Doolan has probably got the best record at Edinburgh of anyone available and we all saw what Jake Allen can do.”
