Silverware is in touching distance for Workington Comets as they race the first of three major finals this weekend.
Team manager Tony Jackson believes the finals of the SGB Championship league play-offs, Championship Shield and Knockout Cup are the biggest fixtures in the club’s history and is hoping for more unforgettable moments from his riders as they aim for what would be a stunning treble.
Comets travel to face Lakeside at Rye House tonight for the Championship Shield final first leg (8pm start) before hosting the second leg at Derwent Park tomorrow (6.30pm start) as the first part of a double-header with an outstanding league meeting against the Hammers.
Comets will use rider replacement for injured Dan Bewley but Rasmus Jensen is fit to ride despite his dramatic crash on Sunday night.
Jackson said: "We’ve done the hard work all season but it will count for nothing if we don’t win anything.
"The team spirit has been fantastic and has got us through so many sticky situations.
"You could see by the reactions of the riders after heat 15 on Sunday what it meant.
"Everyone was dancing around and you just think what it would be like if we won something.
"Both sides we’re up against this weekend are solid teams but you can’t be lucky to reach three finals, so we must have something about us. There’s never been a better time to come and support the Comets.
"Everyone I’ve met in town said they couldn’t sleep on Sunday night and, hopefully, we can have a few more sleepless nights."
The big meetings keep on coming for Workington as they then visit Scunthorpe on Sunday (5pm start) looking to build up a lead in the Knockout Cup final first leg ahead of the second leg at home on Thursday at 7.30pm.
