Skipper Ty Proctor will not be back with Workington Comets next season after re-signing for Sheffield Tigers.
Proctor was announced by the Tigers on Wednesday night.
The Australian spent two seasons at Derwent Park and helped the club lift the treble, although he missed the crucial finals due to a hand injury.
Speaking to the British Speedway Promoters' Association about the move, Proctor said it was purely down to location that he chose to move.
He said: "It's unfortunate, I had a great time there with a great bunch of riders and unfortunately sometimes numbers just don't fit.
"I had a conversation with Laura and Jacko towards the end of the season and just the travelling from Sheffield every week up to Workington on my own was getting a bit much and I felt it was hampering my performance and especially training and stuff like that.
"I was spending way too much time in the van so we had a conversation and it's obviously unfortunate that I can't go back.
"If it was closer to home 100 per cent I would have been back but I'd just like to thank the Workington promotion, their sponsors and the fans and I wish them all the luck."
