Two former Hensingham amateurs are set to go head to head this weekend in the Betfred Super League Grand Final.
Lee Mossop led Salford Red Devils to a superb victory over his former club Wigan at the weekend – and booked their Grand Final place against a St Helens side that boasts another Whitehaven-born player in Kyle Amor.
Salford have been the surprise package towards the end of the season and Mossop is delighted to be heading to Old Trafford – with one last game standing between his side and the ultimate silverware.
Mossop, who co-captains the Salford side, says the team are confident of being able to provide a fitting send-off for the “nine or 10 players” who will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
“Like a lot of teams we’ve got a few players leaving at the end of the season, and we’re fully focused on sending them out on a high,” Mossop said at the press conference.
“We’ve been riding a wave for the last two or three months, we’ve got a lot of momentum behind us and the Salford club is a very good place to be at the minute. Everyone is buzzing, the fans, the town, everybody.”
Prop Mossop and Gil Dudson were among the try scorers against Wigan and winger Krisnan Inu kicked eight goals from as many attempts in the Red Devils’ 28-4 victory over the reigning champions that earns them a tilt at St Helens at Old Trafford on Saturday.
And Salford coach Ian Watson, who had a loan spell during his playing days at Workington Town, admitted his players drew extra motivation from being written off by the critics, who expected his team to be battling with relegation rather than contesting the play-offs.
“It’s a big statement from the players having been written off,” Watson said.
“People questioned us even being in the league at the beginning of the season and basically told us we just had to focus on finishing above London.
“But we knew what we had in our group. We had people who were competitors.
“We tried to cherry-pick them out of good clubs. People probably thought they were done so to get another opportunity with Salford will probably be one of the proudest moments of their careers.”
