West Cumbrian speedway stars Craig Cook and Kyle Bickley narrowly missed out on adding another second-tier title to their trophy cabinets as Glasgow Tigers were beaten by two points by Leicester Lions in the SGB Championship play-off final.
Glasgow won 50-40 in the second leg at Ashfield as Cleator’s Cook went unbeaten with a paid maximum and Bickley, from Workington, scored nine points plus one bonus, but they lost 91-89 on aggregate to their visitors.
Several members of last year’s treble-winning Workington Comets team were involved in the meeting, with Bickley and Jensen part of the Tigers’ side and Ty Proctor in the Lions’ team.
Former Comet Claus Vissing was also in the home team, while Leicester guest Steve Worrall had signed to ride for Workington this season before the club withdrew.
Cook has previously won the division with Edinburgh Monarchs, the Tigers’ fierce rivals.
Glasgow had lost the first leg at Leicester 51-39 but, with home advantage for the second leg, would still have hoped to lift the league title.
Cook and Bickley won the first two races but the Lions were able to hold Glasgow to 3-3s.
By the end of heat six the Tigers had only chipped two points off Leicester’s aggregate lead.
And although the hosts recorded three more heat advantages - a pair of 5-1s and a 4-2 - they did not do enough.
