Former England youth goalkeeper Magnus Norman has completed a move to Carlisle United.

The ex-Fulham man has signed a two-year deal to become the Cumbrians' eighth summer signing.

Norman, 23, has been on United's radar for some time and has been training with Chris Beech's squad ahead of his move being confirmed this morning.

The 6ft 5in keeper will be in the frame to be Carlisle's first-choice keeper after the departures of Adam Collin and Louis Gray, although Beech will be expected to bring in another gloveman to compete with Norman.

The Blues head coach worked with Norman at Rochdale, where the keeper had a loan spell in the 2018/19 season. United's goalkeeper coach Steve Collis also worked with Norman during that period.

Norman joined Fulham aged nine and came through the youth ranks at the London club, from where he was loaned to Farnborough, Hayes & Yeading and Southport before getting his chance in the Football League at Rochdale.

He was also called up by England’s Under-18s in 2015 and made his debut against Switzerland, where the Young Lions squad also included Tammy Abraham, Dominic Solanke, Adam Armstrong and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

It was at Rochdale where he made his Football League debut, Norman playing 12 times for Dale that season, before spending the last campaign back with his parent club’s under-23s.

He is the latest new face through the door at United this week after the arrival of George Tanner, Rod McDonald, Gavin Reilly, Joshua Kayode, Joe Riley, Jack Armer and Danny Devine.

Head coach Beech today said of the new keeper on United's website: “He's 6ft 5in, 23 years of age and built like a tank.

“He's got a great range of kicking, including height and distance and I've seen him throw a ball further than some people can kick it.

“He's a young goalkeeper, but one of those that's been out on loan and got as much experience as he could with the support of Fulham. He’s played Conference football at 18 and 19 and had a spell with Rochdale in League One, when I was there.

“Fast-forward 18 months and he's that little bit older, little bit wiser for the experiences he’s enjoyed, and itching to make a positive impact.

“Magnus is definitely a player that will benefit from coming to us. He could have stayed at Fulham and been third choice, played in bounce games and under-23 football, but he's another that doesn't want to do that.

“He wants to push, battle for the opportunity to be a first-choice goalkeeper at a good club like ours and advance his career.

“He has all the attributes to do that. The groundwork has been done in terms of loan experience, so the support and development he now needs is something he'll 100 per cent get from us.”
