Callum Guy is today crowned as Carlisle United’s player of the year – after a landslide victory in our News & Star poll.
Readers voted the midfield star as the Blues’ top performer in the 2020/21 season by a huge margin.
Guy scooped 47 per cent of the vote after a campaign when he has performed consistently in the middle of the park and topped the League Two assists chart.
The 24-year-old was presented with our trophy, sponsored by the Longhorn Trophies division of Carlisle Glass, after the final game of the season against Walsall today.
Guy told the News & Star he was thrilled to receive the accolade from supporters.
He said: “It’s really pleasing.
“The fans’ support of this club is outstanding – everyone has been tuning in week-in, week-out, paying their money, so it’s nice of them to recognise the performances that I always try to put in, and to show that the hard work on the training ground has paid off.
“It’s been a real shame they couldn’t be in the ground much this season, but it’s nice to have that bond with them on social media and things like that.
“Hopefully we can get them in the stadium next season and they can give us an extra 10 per cent.”
Our end-of-season poll attracted votes from more than 750 United fans.
The former Blackpool and Derby County player finished comfortably in front of his nearest rivals – who were also midfielders.
Top scorer Jon Mellish was second, with 13 per cent of the vote.
That put him narrowly ahead of Joe Riley, who was the choice of 12 per cent of fans.
Keeper Paul Farman and defender Aaron Hayden were next in the running.
Guy has made 47 appearances in 2020/21, having joined the Blues from Blackpool the previous season.
The midfield man’s set-pieces have been a particular feature of United’s campaign, helping Guy rack up 14 league assists – the leading tally in the division.
He follows players such as Keiren Westwood, Richard Keogh, Danny Grainger, Kyle Dempsey, Nicky Adams and Clint Hill in winning our readers’ award.
