Former Carlisle United forward Harry McKirdy is bidding to win a contract with one of the Blues' early season opponents.
McKirdy has made a trial appearance for Swindon Town this week - scoring twice.
The ex-Blues top scorer is with the Wiltshire club after being released by Port Vale.
Relegated Swindon, who host United on the second weekend of the 2021/22 season, are aiming to rebuild their squad after a period of crisis at the County Ground.
The Robins have just been taken over by Clem Morfuni, ending the unpopular Lee Power era, and appointed Ben Chorley and Ben Garner as director of football and head coach respectively.
McKirdy, 24, could be a candidate to join the new-look club after a double against Swindon Supermarine.
He scored the Robins' second and third goals in a 3-2 win. They face Weymouth today.
Former Aston Villa man McKirdy scored 11 goals in 38 appearances in the 2019/20 season for United.
Meanwhile, ex-Carlisle United man Lee Peacock, who has been helping oversee first-team matters, returns to his academy role under the new Swindon regime.
The appointment of Garner as boss follows this summer's short-lived reign of John McGreal, who left the club just a month after taking charge.
