Callum Guy says it was an easy decision to commit his future to Carlisle United – and that his focus never wavered during a summer of transfer speculation.
The midfielder and captain yesterday signed a new deal keeping him at Brunton Park until the summer of 2023.
Guy said he is very happy at Carlisle and that he and his young family have a great rapport with the club and fans.
The 24-year-old had been the subject of transfer interest in August with big-spending Wrexham understood to be keen on the midfield man.
But Guy said: “My 100 per cent focus was at Carlisle, I was contracted here, and I’m really excited to be here – especially for longer now, and especially after being given the armband.
“I don’t think much could have turned my head to be honest with you.”
Guy followed fellow midfielder Jon Mellish in being awarded new two-year terms with the club this week.
Like Mellish, he said it did not take him long to agree to put pen to paper.
“As soon as I heard about it I had a good chat with my family, and they were as excited and proud as I was to get it done,” he said.
“There wasn’t too much thinking. It was nice to get it done.”
Guy said being happy on and off the field was a big factor in his decision to commit to Carlisle for longer.
He added: “It does make a big different when you’re happy somewhere.
“At other clubs I’ve been in and out of teams but I feel like I’ve established a place at the club now.
“Playing games is what every footballer loves. We’ve got such a good squad here, the lads are brilliant, everyone gets on like a house on fire, it’s such a good environment to be around, a good club and really good fanbase who support us 100pc. What more could you want as a footballer?
“I want to repay the faith that everyone at the club has shown in me, the coaching staff, the rest of the lads and everyone behind the scenes. I can’t thank everyone enough.”
Guy also spoke of the security the longer deal gives him and his young family – partner Abbie and children Ava and George.
“My family’s everything to me, I try to repay them and support them as best I can, and signing a new deal means I know where my future lies,” he said.
“It’s a really young family so it is nice to be offered a new deal, because I love it here.
“They’re able to settle as well and I’m the same as anyone, I work for my family and I want to make them proud, which they are.
“My missus is brilliant with helping me with the night feeds – I had to make sure I got that in! – and it’s important for me to be able to look after them.
“Abbie interacts with the fans, they get along really well and that’s massive for me. It’s nice to have a good connection with the fans and it’s time to repay them for the faith they’ve shown me.”
