Former Carlisle United captain and Workington Reds manager Danny Grainger has stepped down from his role at Falkirk.

The Cumbrian has left his position as assistant head coach at the Scottish League One club.

Grainger, who joined the club in the summer, had been in caretaker charge following the sacking of Paul Sheerin.

But after the appointment of new head coach Martin Rennie, it was confirmed that 35-year-old Grainger would be leaving the club.

In a statement, Falkirk said: "The Board can announce that Danny Grainger has today stepped down from his role as Assistant Head Coach at Falkirk Football Club.

"On behalf of the whole Club we’d like to express our thanks to Danny for all his hard work this season, and wish him well in his future career.

"New Head Coach Martin Rennie arrived in Scotland today and, subject to a successful PCR test, will meet the team and take training for the first time on Thursday.

"We expect to be able to announce the appointment of a new Assistant Head Coach shortly."

Grainger was placed in interim charge a week ago and was in the dugout for fifth-placed Falkirk's 3-0 home defeat to leaders Cove Rangers on Saturday.

He had left Workington in the summer after two years in charge to take up the role north of the border.

His time as Reds boss had twice seen him lead the Borough Park club close to promotion before Covid curtailed the seasons.

That followed the end of his playing career after five years with United, for whom he made 197 appearances and scored 34 goals, most as captain.

He previously played for Gretna, Dundee United, St Johnstone, Hearts, St Mirren and Dunfermline.

Grainger also runs the Cumbria Football Academy in Penrith.
