Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe admits he is very impressed with teenage Cumbrian Joe White.

The Carlisle midfielder was named on the bench for the Magpies' Premier League game against Manchester City on Sunday.

It was the second time this season that the 19-year-old has been involved with the first-team squad for a top-flight game this campaign.

And Howe says the young Cumbrian has caught the eye.

"With Joe White, I've been very impressed," said Howe in an official club interview.

"I saw him playing for the development squad recently, and he performed really well.

"He's a talented player."

Howe said White and fellow prospect Elliot Anderson were justifiably on the bench despite Newcastle being without a number of first-team players.

Asked if their promotion reflected the lack of senior numbers, or the teenagers' potential, Howe said: "An element of both. No-one's on the bench that you don't want involved."

White was previously named in the first-team squad by previous boss Steve Bruce for Newcastle's top-flight trip to Manchester United in September.

The teenager made his first senior outings in pre-season and has impressed for Newcastle's Under-23s.

The son of Jamie and Fiona and the grandson of the late former Workington Reds manager and Carlisle United player, coach and physio Peter Hampton, White has been with Newcastle since 2016, having previously been on Carlisle's books.
