His maverick skill made him an iconic figure at more than one team.

And now former Carlisle United star Stan Bowles will be permanently celebrated at the club he joined from the Blues.

Queen's Park Rangers, where Bowles is often described as one of their greatest ever players, have named a stand after the legendary player.

They used the occasion of Bowles' 73rd birthday - December 24 - to announce that the Ellerslie Road Stand at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium will be renamed as 'The Stanley Bowles Stand'.

It follows a fan-led campaign to see the former England international recognised in such a way at the club he graced for seven years.

Bowles had come to prominence in a starring spell for Carlisle from 1971-2, having joined the Cumbrians from Crewe.

His time with United included a memorable part in the Blues' Anglo-Italian Cup exploits in the summer of 1972, including victory over AS Roma in the Stadio Olimpico.

His move to QPR then saw Bowles go on to cement his reputation as one of the most talented players of his generation.

He went on to win five England caps. Since 2015 he has been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.

Campaigns named Plan for Stan, the Maverick Team and A Stand for Our Stanley led efforts to see Bowles recognised at QPR, with those campaigning about dementia in football also showing their support.

The Loftus Road club's chief executive Lee Hoos said: “Through engagement with a variety of fans which included meetings, online surveys and stadium surveys, we took on board lots of different views from supporters.

“With a topic such as this, you are never going to get a unanimous vote but one largely common theme did shine through – Stan Bowles should be honoured while a number of other former players also deserve special recognition.

“We believe we have achieved this with the decision to rename the Ellerslie Road Stand as The Stanley Bowles Stand, and also introducing a Legends Stand.”

Hoos said that the club would be "helping to facilitate the fundraising for the cost of the changes [but] this will still need to be financed as a fan-based initiative."

“Any funds raised beyond the costs incurred will be donated to The No.10 Foundation.”

United fans have celebrated Bowles in their own way recently.

The Blues' London Branch supporters have produced a commemorative t-shirt for this year's 50th anniversary of the famous 3-2 win in Rome.

It features Bowles on the front juggling a ball - as he famously did to the consternation of Roma players during United's Italian victory.

Every shirt sold sees a donation made to the Alzhemier's Society in tribute to Bowles.
