Cumbria’s Olympic swimming star Luke Greenbank will go for glory in the Commonwealth Games this summer after being named in Team England’s squad.

Cockermouth’s Greenbank, a double medallist at Tokyo 2020, was selected among ten swimmers for the Birmingham games.

It will give the 24-year-old the chance of more success, with Greenbank having also won a silver medal at the previous Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018.

His feats in Tokyo last summer also saw the Cumbrian named Cumbria’s Sports Personality of the Year.

He shone in the men’s 200m backstroke in Japan, winning bronze, before helping the man’s 4x100m medley repay claim silver.

He was named by Team England for this summer’s games along with Adam Peaty, Anna Hopkin, Tom Dean, James Wilby, Max Litchfield, Abbie Wood, Ben Proud, Molly Renshaw and Alicia Wilson.

Each of the team reached at least one individual final in Tokyo, while Greenbank will be one of more than 400 athletes to compete at Birmingham 2022 in the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Greenbank hopes to make the most of his opportunity this summer and build on his recent successes.

“For me, 2021 was such an amazing year with the Olympics,” he said on swimming.org.

“It’s what can I do next, how can I improve on that. It’s very much a case of keeping the momentum going and just looking to get better, really.

“I was very proud of what I achieved at the Olympics. It was an amazing opportunity and an amazing experience but I still didn’t come away with a gold medal and that’s something I have definitely my eyes on at the next Olympics.

“I’ll be using the Commonwealths as a huge stepping stone to gain a lot of experience of racing at an international level.

“I think I’m in a really good position to go in and win it but I don’t want to get ahead of myself and become complacent.

“I believe I have a really good chance but I have to do everything right to maximise my performance going into Birmingham.”

Team England’s Chef de Mission, Mark England OBE, added: “This is an exceptional swimming team selected to represent Team England in Birmingham this summer.

"It contains World, Olympic, and Commonwealth Champions and medal winners and I’m confident they will perform with distinction at what will undoubtedly be a very competitive swim meet.”
