Carlisle United's 12-point cushion above the League Two relegation zone remained intact after Tuesday's games in the division.
Second-bottom Oldham Athletic failed to make up ground on the sides above them as they lost 3-1 at home to Sutton United.
John Sheridan's 23rd-placed Latics have now lost their last five games.
Their latest setback came as Ricky Korboa scored twice before Harry Beautyman's penalty wrapped things up for Sutton.
Will Sutton's 81st-minute goal was only a consolation for Oldham, who remain three points adrift of safety.
Sheridan's side have now played the same number of games as United and have an inferior goal difference.
Another of the sides in the survival battle, Leyton Orient, chalked up an impressive 3-0 win at Harrogate Town to ease their relegation worries.
The Os moved up to 17th, sending Carlisle down a place on goal difference, after an Aaron Drinan double and a third from in-form Ruel Sotiriou.
It was a second consecutive win for Orient under new boss Richie Wellens.
Elsewhere in the division, Rochdale were beaten 1-0 at home by play-off-chasing Mansfield Town, and are now 19th.
Jordan Bowery got the late winner for Nigel Clough's side, who are tenth, while Rochdale are nine points above the drop zone having failed to win in their last six.
The evening's other game saw a 0-0 draw between Port Vale and Exeter City at Vale Park.
