EFL pundit Dean Ashton praised the impact of Carlisle United's strike pairing in their win over Bristol Rovers.

Kristian Dennis' second goal in two games saw the Cumbrians claim the three points against a side within touching distance of the automatic promotion places.

And the goal owed much to the work of fellow January arrival Omari Patrick, whose tremendous piece of skill created the first opportunity for Jordan Gibson - with Dennis then netting the rebound after his shot was saved.

And former West Ham United frontman Ashton was quick to hail the front two as a key factor in the win.

"It was interesting he [Simpson] said there - they knew they got outplayed," said the one-time England cap, speaking on EFL on Quest.

"But when you've been down there as they [Carlisle] were, and the run that they're on, it seems that things in these games go for you.

"Omari Patrick with a fantastic bit of skill on the touchline and then Kristian Dennis with his second in two games. We talk about forwards and that can be the difference in a tight game like that."

The result may have come as a surprise to many outside of Cumbria had they only taken a cursory glance at the League Two table.

But despite the contrast in league positions, Oxford United manager Karl Robinson wasn't shocked to see Carlisle pick up maximum points given Simpson's early impact.

Also speaking on Quest's highlights show, he said:"Is that a shock result? It wasn't really.

"They're two good teams and Simmo is a good guy.

"Joey has obviously done really well this year and I wish them both luck."
