Two experienced ex-Carlisle United players are on the move at the end of the National League North season.

Luke Joyce is departing AFC Fylde while Simon Grand is moving on from Chester.

It follows the publication of the clubs' respective retained and released lists.

Midfielder Joyce is released by Fylde after a season with the club.

It comes after they missed out on promotion in the play-offs.

The 34-year-old, who had two spells with Carlisle, had joined Fylde after three years with Port Vale.

Joyce stressed he is looking forward to his next challenge in the game.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "It’s been a pleasure @AFCFylde. Gutted not to achieve our aim of promotion.

"Met some great lads and wish them all the best for the future.

"Circumstances can dictate your journey in football. Really excited for the next chapter and challenge - plenty of football left in me."

Joyce also runs his own football academy.

Defender Grand, meanwhile, sees his four-year stint at Chester come to an end.

The 38-year-old has been a consistent servant for the Deva Stadium club along with fellow ex-United man Danny Livesey, who recently announced his retirement.

Grand, who played for the Cumbrians from 2004-7, was one of eight players departing Chester at the expiry of their current deals.

That number also includes two more former Carlisle players in goalkeeper Louis Gray and striker George Waring.

Chester paid tribute to Grand, Livesey, Waring and Gray, saying they had amassed 405 Chester appearances between them.

Gateshead, helped by Carlisle loanee Taylor Charters, won the National League North title, and they will be joined in non-league's top tier next season by York City.

The Minstermen beat Boston United 2-0 in yesterday's play-off final.

Former Carlisle loan keeper Marcus Dewhurst was on the losing side.
