Taylor Charters has signed a new one-year deal at Carlisle United.

The Maryport midfielder has agreed terms to extend his stay at Brunton Park.

Charters is the first of the players offered a new contract by the Blues to sign up with Paul Simpson's squad.

The 20-year-old spent half of last season on loan with National League North champions Gateshead.

And Simpson hopes Charters can deliver on his potential in the first-team environment next season, having tied him to the club until the summer of 2023.

Simpson said he was "delighted" academy product Charters had agreed to remain with the club.

"He’s enjoyed himself with his loan spell and I think he’s feeling confident and ready to go," the manager told United's website.

"As a club we want players coming through from our academy and he’s one who is on that journey.

"His time at Gateshead has given him the experience of being part of a team pushing for and achieving promotion and it goes without saying that it will stand him in good stead to have had that experience.

"It’s up to him to take the opportunity now, but that’s the same for every player. I’m sure he’ll be keen to get back at the end of next month and get going again."

Charters has 38 first-team appearances to his name for Carlisle, and one goal.

United are still waiting to resolve the futures of Magnus Norman and Brennan Dickenson, who were among four players offered new deals at the end of last season.

A fourth, Joe Riley, has already informed Carlisle that he is moving on.
