Carlisle United will have either a first-ever meeting with Solihull Moors or a return to Grimsby Town next season.

Those clubs have battled their way into the National League play-off final.

It follows a dramatic weekend in which Grimsby - featuring United loan striker Tristan Abrahams - beat Wrexham in an extraordinary nine-goal thriller.

The Mariners' 5-4 extra-time victory at the Racecourse Ground dashed the promotion hopes of big-spending Wrexham and their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny.

Abrahams, who is on a half-season loan from the Blues, came off the bench in the 87th minute as Grimsby - also including ex-Carlisle goalkeeper Max Crocombe - grabbed a dramatic winner with a minute of extra-time remaining through defender Luke Waterfall.

It was Waterfall's second goal of the game in a thrilling tie, John McAtee, Ryan Taylor and Mani Dieseruvwe also on target for Grimsby, with Paul Mullin (two), Ben Tozer and Jordan Davies scoring for Wrexham.

Grimsby boss Paul Hurst said: "There was so much drama. I'm not sure my heart can take it."

And on Sunday, Solihull inched a step closer to becoming a Football League club for the first time.

They enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Chesterfield at Damson Park.

The visitors took an early lead through Joe Quigley but Neal Ardley's Solihull hit back through Andrew Dallas and Alex Gudger, with Callum Howe adding a third in the second half.

Former Carlisle defender Mark Ellis was an unused sub for Solihull - the club where, until recently, new Blues head of recruitment Greg Abbott had been working as a football consultant.

They will take on Grimsby in the final next Sunday at the London Stadium.

For Grimsby it would be an immediate return to the EFL after last season's relegation, while for Solihull promotion would take them to the highest level in their history, the club having resulted from a merger between Solihull Borough and Moor Green in 2007.
