Paul Simpson opted against offering Mark Howard a new contract following the conclusion of the 2021/22 season, while Magnus Norman recently turned down the new deal put on the table by the Blues.

That leaves just academy graduates Gabriel Breeze and Scott Simons as the goalkeepers at Simpson's disposal with just over a fortnight to go until pre-season begins.

Sourcing at least one new stopper will therefore be a priority for Simpson and recruitment chief Greg Abbott - but who is available?

We take a look at some of the goalkeepers released by clubs in the top four divisions:

Premier League

Top flight clubs have released a number of goalkeepers this summer - but you would have to concede it's unlikely that a John Ruddy or Ben Foster will be arriving at Brunton Park this summer.

There are, however, some younger goalkeepers now on the market.

Jake Turner wasn't offered a new contract at Newcastle United and has EFL experience courtesy of loan spells at Morecambe and Colchester United.

While the former England under-19 international failed to establish himself as number one at either club, he could be an interesting option if the Blues are looking for a goalkeeper with potential.

Championship

There are some big name goalkeepers now looking for a club after spells in the Championship.

The likes of Alex Smithies, Sam Johnstone and Jamal Blackman will no doubt attract plenty of interest - as too will Keiren Westwood, whom Simpson has already seemingly ruled-out a move for.

But there are some potentially more realistic options that could appeal to the Blues.

Formerly of Sunderland, Lee Burge has previously won promotion from League Two with Coventry City and would undoubtedly be a fine addition - but may have his sights set higher.

Connor Ripley, who has left Preston North End, could be another interesting potential signing while ex-Birmingham stopper Connal Trueman will be looking for somewhere to get regular football after struggling to establish himself at St Andrew's.

League One

There are no shortage of experienced stoppers now on the market - with Scott Flinders (Cheltenham Town), Stephen Henderson (Charlton Athletic) and the towering Tomas Holy (Ipswich Town) all being released by third tier clubs.

David Cornell, meanwhile, has plenty of experience in both League One and League Two after spells with the likes of Ipswich, Northampton and Oldham - and has been released by Peterborough.

But Simpson has hinted that he may seek younger options when it comes to his goalkeepers this summer.

So could Kieran O'Hara - a 26-year-old formerly of Manchester United and more recently Fleetwood - be an option?

League Two 

The fourth tier also offers some potential signings for Carlisle

Will Jaaskelainen, son of former Bolton stopper Jussi, has been allowed to leave Crewe Alexandra to seek a new challenge. At 23, he could fit the mould that Simpson is seeking.

Ex-Rochdale 'keeper Joel Coleman has already been linked with a number of League Two sides - including Hartlepool and Stockport County - and will no doubt be attracting many admiring glances.

And so too will Rory Watson, who has departed Scunthorpe United following their relegation. While it was an unsuccessful campaign for the Iron, Watson was one player to emerge with credit.
