Carlisle United will face Manchester United's under-21 side in the Papa John's Trophy.
They will join the Blues, Barrow and Fleetwood Town in Group G of the competition.
Invited under-21 teams play all their games away from home, with Carlisle United guaranteed two home fixtures during the group stage - against the Red Devils and one of the two EFL sides.
Last year, the Blues won a group that included Everton U21s, Morecambe and Hartlepool United, before then beating Lincoln City in the second round.

The first ties in this season's competition will take place on the week commencing August 29, with the remaining group fixtures to be played on September 21 and October 19.
A full schedule will be released in due course, at which point it will be confirmed which of Barrow and Fleetwood will travel to Brunton Park.
Wembley Stadium will again host the final, which will be held on March 19.
Carlisle United have reached the final of the competition six times, lifting the trophy twice.
