Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt felt his side gave Carlisle United a "leg-up" in the pre-season game at Brunton Park.

The Blues turned over Evatt's League One visitors 3-1.

And the Trotters boss said his team caused their own downfall against Paul Simpson's men.

"It gives us another challenge and chance to have a look at a team that really sacrificed possesion, really sat in and tried to play on the counter attack and for set plays," said Evatt of the Blues.

"We gave them a leg up by conceding two sloppy goals and a set play.

"We have to stamp that out."

Bolton came unstuck after United pounced on an error in the 18th minute, Owen Moxon sending Ryan Edmondson through to score.

Ben Barclay headed the second after a corner, and after Aaron Morley's penalty halved the Blues' lead, Kristian Dennis poached the Cumbrians' third.

Former Barrow boss Evatt, speaking to Bolton's official channels, said: "[I'm] happy it's out of the way and not July 30.

"We tend to throw in one of these performances in pre-season and today was our day.

"We win, or we learn - and we've learned lots.

"We've learned that once you have control of a game you cannot make mistakes that give opposition a leg-up.

"We've had lots of comfortable possession but made two bad errors that cost us dearly.

"It will be good for the players to see another side of me.

"We're in the business of winning football matches, especially at a club like this. We've got huge expectations, from within more than anything else.

"We've got to make sure we perform to those expectations and today we've let our standards slip.

"We know that. No damage done, it is a friendly but we have to make sure we take learnings from this and make sure it doesn't happen again."
