Paul Simpson has played down the importance of who wears the captain’s armband at Carlisle United this season.

Whilst the manager has yet to confirm who will skipper the side in 2022/23, Simpson stressed he wants leadership all over the pitch.

Callum Guy has captained United in the last two campaigns and will be favourite to continue in the role.

He has often wore the armband in pre-season – as has defender Morgan Feeney, who led the team when Guy was unavailable last term.

Simpson has not yet stated a captaincy decision publicly but also said it is more important that plenty of players are prepared to step up.

Asked if it was inevitable that Guy was the skipper in 2022/23, United’s boss said: “No - there’s no guarantee that Callum’s going to start the season.

“I think him and Morgan Feeney have both done really well.

“I’m not overly bothered about who gets the captain[cy]. I don’t think it’s a massive thing.

“I want everybody to talk. I’ve been delighted with Ben Barclay as a new player, he’s a talker, an organiser. Edmo [Ryan Edmondson] is the same.

“I think once you start getting one or two more who are speaking, they all start to come to the party. It doesn’t bother me who’s got the armband.”

Simpson and the squad are spending the latest day of their camp in Largs.

The training and team-bonding trip, which also included a behind-closed-doors 1-0 defeat to Livingston, comes to an end before Saturday’s final friendly at Morecambe.
