A latest look at some of the news, deals and rumours from around Carlisle United’s division…

SADDLERS SIGN EX-CHELSEA KID

Walsall have continued their transfer activity after the deadline by bringing in free agent Jacob Maddox.

The former Chelsea Under-21 and England youth player was most recently with Portuguese club Vitoria Sport Clube.

Manager Michael Flynn, after handing the 23-year-old midfielder a one-year deal, told Walsall’s website: “He’s technically very good. He came through at Chelsea and has been around a winning environment and that’s key for us because we want winners.”

Walsall have also signed 17-year-old trialist forward Jonas Mukuna.

TRANMERE FAN FACES FLARE BAN

A Tranmere Rovers fan has been convicted of throwing a missile onto a pitch – and could face a country-wide stadium ban.

Abbie-Leigh Reay, 23, from Bebington, Merseyside, denied the charge but was convicted after a trial.

The supermarket worker was arrested after picking up a flare and throwing it towards the referee during Tranmere’s 3-0 defeat at Forest Green Rovers in January. She will be sentenced later this month.

SIMEU’S LOSING DEBUT

Former Carlisle United loan favourite Dynel Simeu got off to a losing start after his deadline-day move to Tranmere.

The Southampton defender was on the bench for their trip to Leyton Orient.

Simeu came on after 70 minutes, but couldn’t help Micky Mellon’s side avoid a 2-0 defeat to the League Two leaders.

HATTERS HAIL IRISH PROSPECT

Stockport County believe they have landed a bright prospect in 19-year-old striker Daniel Okwute, who joined from League of Ireland side Kerry FC.

“He’s a goalscorer, who, with the right guidance and development we feel can make a real impact,” manager Dave Challinor told the club website.

“We will get him accustomed to full-time training and see what a development plan and games programme looks like over the coming months.”

DONNY’S EX-BLUE SIDELINED

Doncaster Rovers defender Tom Anderson is set for another spell on the sidelines.

The former Carlisle United loan player recently returned from a foot problem, but a back spasm forced him off against Salford City in their victory last month.

“He is probably going to be four to six weeks away,” manager Gary McSheffrey said in the Doncaster Free Press.

AWARD FOR FORMER CARLISLE FRONTMAN

Bradford City’s in-form striker Andy Cook is celebrating after being named Carabao Cup player of the round.

The ex-Carlisle man was rewarded for his brace that knocked out Hull City in the first round.

The 31-year-old celebrated by scoring his seventh of the season to help the Bantams to a 2-1 league win over Walsall.

MCKIRDY ADMITS ‘MISTAKE’

After making his debut for Hibernian following his deadline-day move from Swindon Town, former Carlisle United man Harry McKirdy has commented on his ban over a post-match incident against Salford City.

McKirdy threw a protein shake in the officials’ room which soaked the referee’s change of clothes. He received a three-match ban and a £1,500 fine.

“Look, we all make mistakes,” said McKirdy in The Scotsman.

“I understand I crossed a line. That’s in the past now, as long as I learn from it. I’m looking to keep my head down and make headlines for the right reasons now.

“That’s my first ever red card. I don’t want to say anything about it but, if you watch the red card, I’ll let you make your mind up on it.”
