Carlisle United striker Sam Fishburn's loan spell with Blyth Spartans has ended early.

The National League North club have announced that the teenager has returned to Brunton Park.

Fishburn, 18, was on a three-month loan at Croft Park which was due to run until late October.

But the young Blues player is no longer with Blyth, the north east club confirmed on Tuesday night.

"We can confirm that striker Sam Fishburn has returned to his parent club," the non-league club said in a statement on social media.

"We would like to thank Sam and wish him all the best for the future."

Carlisle have not yet commented, but manager Paul Simpson is expected to comment at his press conference on Thursday.

The announcement came on the day Fishburn played and scored for Carlisle's reserves in their 1-0 win at Fleetwood Town in the Central League Cup.

He joined Blyth in late July in the hope of regular first-team football.

But Fishburn has largely been limited to substitute appearances, and did not get off the bench in Blyth's latest game, a 4-0 defeat to Peterborough Sports.

His stint with Blyth was the second loan move of his young career after he impressed in a spell with Lancaster City last season.
