Barrow AFC 2 Carlisle United 0: Carlisle United went out of the Papa John's Trophy after their game at Barrow was held up for 17 minutes by a firework incident.

A shocking moment saw a person in the home end launch a firework into the Carlisle area after three minutes of the all-Cumbrian cup game.

It thankfully exploded out of range of the nearest player - United keeper Michael Kelly.

The game was held up amid prolonged discussions between officials and police, who later announced they had arrested someone.

The entire home end was cleared of Barrow fans before the game could resume.

When it did, goals from Josh Kay and Sam Foley earned a 2-0 win for the south Cumbrians as United suffered yet another injury - this time to Jack Stretton.

Both managers made six changes from their respective league games on Saturday.

Carlisle's Paul Simpson handed a full debut to striker Nic Bollado on his 18th birthday.

And there were also call-ups for Kelly, Morgan Feeney, Taylor Charters, Jayden Harris and Duncan Idehen.

Tobi Sho-Silva was not involved despite Simpson saying he had been considering a role for the fit-again striker.

For Barrow, Pete Wild brought in Josh Lillis, Tom White, Myles Kenlock, David Moyo, George Ray and Jordan Stevens.

Once things got back under way after the firework incident, Barrow's Kay shot over the bar as the hosts resumed on the front foot.

Carlisle's injury curse then returned as Jack Stretton went down on the left and looked in plenty of discomfort as he limped off after treatment, to be replaced by Ryan Edmondson.

Barrow continued to apply pressure, Kelly making a fine save at Moyo’s feet and Myles Kenlock sending a shot into Feeney’s midriff.

Carlisle built better pressure later in the half, Harris denied by a defensive block and Corey Whelan denied by a Tyrell Warren goalline clearance.

Kay warmed Kelly’s palms at the end of the prolonged first half, which finally concluded after 17 added minutes.

Simpson brought on Jon Mellish for Whelan at the break, and Carlisle survived a Barrow attack when a Kelly save ricocheted against the arriving Moyo and went just wide.

Jordan Gibson went close from outside the box at the other end before Barrow's Kay came closest in the 64th minute, checking inside and rifling against the underside of the crossbar.

Barrow, though, remained dangerous through link-ups between Billy Waters and Kay, and on 70 minutes they broke and scored through that route.

After some head tennis in the home half, the hosts got on the wrong side of Carlisle and after Waters fed Kay, the latter cut in from the left against Jack Ellis before drilling low inside Kelly's near post.

Simpson responded by bringing on Callum Guy and Jack Armer, as Wild sent on the experienced Sam Foley.

Ellis was unable to make the most of a promising position down the right for the Blues, before the teenager saw a low, goalbound shot blocked.

Ellis was then pressed into defensive duty as he raced back to deny Kay.

But Carlisle then found themselves two behind with ten minutes to go as a deep Barrow corner was nodded back by Ray for sub Foley to head home.

United could not find a way back and their interest in the Trophy was duly ended.
