A Carlisle mother has walked away more geared up than ever after competing in the Powerlifting World Championships in Canada.

Competing for Great Britain, Sharon Holmes brought back home a trifecta of glorious results, bagging herself a gold medal, silver and a bronze.

The 50-year-old who has competed 13 times and twice for Great Britain, earned herself a gold medal for the bench press lifting at 72.5kg, a silver medial for squats and a bronze for her deadlift at 147.5kg.

"It really went brilliantly. Unfortunately, when I was warming up for the squats I had a previous niggle that flared up. It meant the weights felt heavier, so I had to drop my weight for the squats.

"The bench felt amazing though, felt like nothing. And for deadlifts, The total I got was the same as the girl who got the second but she was a lighter weight, so she got second and I got third," she said.

In June 2022, Sharon won the British Master's II category, bagging her a spot in the Canada championship which took place on October 10.

Looking ahead, Sharon is getting back to training and will be looking to build on her success with a trip to Budapest, Hungary, to compete in the European Championships in March next year.

"I'm really pleased but I want more, so head down and push on. When you've done it, it gives you the fire for the next and makes you more determined," she said.

Sharon gave 'huge thanks' to her renowned strength trainer Tom Martin and to all of those that donated to her fundraiser to help get her across to Canada to compete.

"There was so many people watching live from home as well on the day, it was so nice to have that - it almost helped you to lift knowing people were cheering you on from home."
