Paul Simpson says Ryan Edmondson will be “dealt with” after his red card – but said he would not go overboard on the striker.

Carlisle United striker Edmondson is facing a three-game ban following his first-half dismissal against Leyton Orient.

It followed a flashpoint with Os captain Darren Pratley.

Simpson did not have any objection to referee Thomas Parsons’ decision to show the ex-Leeds United man a straight red card for raising his hands to Pratley.

It means the 21-year-old will miss tomorrow’s trip to Stockport County plus the league and cup double-header with Tranmere Rovers.

Simpson said: “He will be dealt with because that’s unacceptable.

“We’ve had incredible discipline – as a whole group so far this season our discipline has been first class.

“We’re going to have to stick together now, and we’ll have to look after Ryan.

“It’s a huge learning experience, and remember he's still a young fella.

“He has worked extremely hard to get fit, and sadly he’s now got a three-game suspension and he’s going to have to work extremely hard during that three-game suspension, and then he’ll be even fitter when we get him back out there.”

Edmondson’s absence comes at a time United are already depleted in attack with Omari Patrick out for several weeks and Jack Stretton working his way back from an ankle injury.

The Derby County man will be assessed ahead of tomorrow’s game, while Tobi Sho-Silva made a welcome return as a sub in the 3-2 defeat to Orient.

Simpson, speaking after the game, said an appeal against Edmondson’s red card was unlikely.

“There was a little bit of a coming together with Pratley, but I’ll need to watch closer to see what happened,” he said.

“It seemed a little bit of an exaggerated reaction to do what he [Pratley] did, but I’m not defending Ryan, he deserved to be sent off.

“Once you lift your hands, whether it be a slap, a punch or whatever it is you do, the referee has to make that decision.

“It is a rush of blood that he’s got to learn from.”
