Former Carlisle United forward Harry McKirdy has been reminded of his social media responsibilities after controversial Instagram comments.

The ex-Blues player appeared to suggest he wanted to return to Swindon Town in a reply to a supporter on the platform.

Reports north of the border say the Hibernian player has been reprimanded after fans picked up on the post and criticised the 25-year-old.

Hibs manager Lee Johnson said McKirdy may have been feeling "lonely and unloved" following an injury.

But he said the player, who joined the Edinburgh outfit on September's transfer deadline day, was "aware of expectations" when it came to social media activity.

McKirdy responded 'Not wrong' to a Swindon fan who had posted on Instagram: 'Time to come back @HarryMcKirdy'.

The reply was later deleted.

Johnson, in comments reported by FootballScotland, said: "It's something that we've obviously had a conversation about.

"I don't think he's meant any malice on Hibs. I think he was a bit lonely and feeling a little bit unloved with the injury that he's got.

"Injured players can get a bit down at times and he probably just wanted, at that moment, some external gratification that he knew that he could get quickly from Swindon.

"I don't think it was the wisest thing to do but you'll have to ask him.

"I've had a conversation with him, but I'd much prefer those conversations to remain private.

"But what I can assure you of is that he's aware of the expectations when it comes to social media."

McKirdy - Carlisle's top scorer in the 2019/20 season - has made six appearances without scoring since his move from Swindon to Hibs.
