Former Carlisle United man James Brown was the talk of Scottish football after his brilliant goal stunned Rangers.

The ex-Blues loanee socred his first career goal with a sensational strike for St Johnstone.

It helped Saints beat Rangers 2-1 in the Scottish Premiership as pressure mounted on Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Brown, who was on loan at Carlisle from Millwall in the 2017/18 season, struck an upstoppable shot past Rangers keeper Allan McGregor to give St Johnstone's the lead at McDiarmid Park.

"It just dropped nicely and I thought, 'Why not?' and it flew in the top corner," said Brown to Saints' official media channels after the game.

Manager Callum Davidson later told Sky Sports: “I’ve not seen James hit the target yet in training so all credit to him."

Nicky Clark hit another for Saints with a penalty from ex-United loanee James Tavernier not enough for Rangers.

Another ex-Carlisle man in the news over the weekend was former Blues striker Hallam Hope.

He made his first appearance for Oldham Athletic in two months after he was the victim of an alleged assault in September.

Hope, Oldham said, suffered "serious injuries" in what they described as a "vicious attack" after the Latics' game against Chesterfield.

He was back in the Oldham side for their FA Cup first round trip to Wrexham.

Hope played 83 minutes as a Wrexham side including fellow ex-Blues Aaron Hayden and Mark Howard won 3-0.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on September 9 on suspicion of assaulting Hope and released under investigation.

Oldham boss David Unsworth, speaking to the Oldham Times ahead of the cup tie, said: "It's great to have Hallam Hope available.

"He's flying in training. He's passed all the different stages you have to do from a concussion side. You come back and you do a certain amount of rehab, and then you go non-contact then you go partial contact...this week he's been in full contact and he looks great.

"I'm delighted to have Hallam back. Obviously I've known him from my Everton days and he's a great kid and a top player.

"It's like a new signing for us."
