Paul Simpson has pinpointed the role played by young Cumbrian Taylor Charters in Carlisle United’s stunning win at Salford.

The Maryport midfielder is holding down his place in the side – and again played his part in an impressive 4-1 victory.

Simpson said he asked Charters to carry out a particular task to nullify one of Salford’s dangermen.

And he says the west Cumbrian showed his maturity in the way he contributed to one of United’s finest away-day efforts in recent memory.

“He’s deserved to stay in the side,” said Simpson of the home-grown Charters.

“He was competing in my mind, for this role, with Jordan Gibson, who I think has been probably our most creative player and most effective in creating goalscoring chances.

“I just felt Taylor was going to do a real good job for us out of possession in this game, and I had to sacrifice Jordan’s forward play for that.

“But when we’ve got options, that’s the good thing, we can make these adjustments.

“Taylor played as a number ten to get around Elliot Watt, and then he changed and came and played wide.

“He’s played two or three different areas but he just rolls his sleeves up and gets on with the job.”

It was 21-year-old Charters’ fifth consecutive start – comfortably his best run of starts in United’s first team since coming through the club’s academy.

He combined well with fellow Cumbrian Owen Moxon in the build-up for Kristian Dennis’s clinching fourth goal at the Peninsula Stadium.

Before that, another midfielder – Callum Guy – had set United on their way to victory by putting them 2-1 up.

It was an impressive strike from Guy for his third of the campaign – and sees the midfielder remaining on the goal trail having not scored for the Blues before this season.

And Simpson said: “I can’t claim any credit for that.

“I just said to him afterwards that if he’d struck it properly it would have been an even better goal…

“The set-up’s right, and he’s locking on the edge of the box and dealing with things.”
