They are the latest flags celebrating Carlisle United and one of the team’s local heroes.

And they took pride of place in the away end at Doncaster Rovers for the first time.

The two large flags, designed after a fundraising initiative, were unveiled ahead of United’s New Year’s Day clash at the Eco-Power Stadium.

One features Carlisle-born midfielder Owen Moxon, with the words, ‘He’s one of our own’.

The other is a Union Jack in Carlisle’s famous 1990s’ ‘deckchair’ colours of green, white and red, with ‘Carlisle United’ written across the middle.

They will add further style to United’s support in the second half of the 2022/23 season.

It follows an initiative last season which saw a large tribute flag to manager Paul Simpson on display.

Blues fan Chris Cope is behind the initiative, with fellow supporter Rob Morley responsible for the designs.

They have set up the ‘Flags for United’ social media account to help raise money for the flags and to give supporters their say in the plans.

Chris told the News & Star: “Due to the success of the Paul Simpson flag, me and Rob wanted to give it another go and see if we could make something out of it, hence why we set up Flags for United.

“It gives people the chance to share their designs and opinions, and is a centralised way to raise money.

“The original plan was to mirror some other clubs and make it a subscription model so people can donate monthly and when we finalise a plan, get everyone to agree and we get it made.

“It helps keep the costs low – a fiver a month is somewhat easier on the pocket than a one-off £30 donation.

“We started with sharing it on the Flags for United page and welcoming bank transfers. It didn’t quite take off although we did raise roughly £150 through that.

“We then decided to do a JustGiving to top it up, which is currently sat at £310.

“The money was originally for just the Moxon flag but we swapped suppliers and they were a lot cheaper. We then put the choice to followers of the page and the decision was to spend a certain amount on the Moxon flag and the rest to go to another design – that’s where the deckchair Union flag came to life.

“Everyone on the page agreed to spend the money on the Union flag.

“We have approximately £140 left for whatever comes next.”

The Moxon design was inspired by a photo of the Denton Holme midfielder – taken by Ben Holmes – celebrating his goal in front of the travelling supporters at Hartlepool earlier this season.

“The Union flag is something me and Rob have been talking about for years,” added Chris.

“We are chuffed with how they have both turned out.”

Both were on show in the away section at Doncaster as 1,222 Carlisle fans followed Simpson’s side to South Yorkshire for the 2-1 New Year’s Day defeat.
