Carlisle United duo Brennan Dickenson and Josh Dixon will spend next week at St George’s Park to boost their recovery from injury.

The players will be put through their paces at the national football centre.

Both are on the way back from anterior cruciate knee ligament injuries.

Manager Paul Simpson says the several-day stay at St George’s Park in Burton-on-Trent will see some valuable work for both.

“They’ll get some really intense work, they do three or four sessions a day,” said Simpson.

“Because they stay on site there, they get worked to death to be honest with you, which is brilliant.

“There’s a good group of staff there who work with the PFA [Professional Footballers’ Association] rehab group, and it’s just an intense opportunity to get loads and loads of work into them, lots of one-to-one attention.

“I know the last time we had a player went there recently it was brilliant – from the work they did, they really came on strong from it.

“Hopefully that will be the same for these guys.”

Midfielder Dixon has been out since last April after suffering his injury in a reserve game against Morecambe.

Left-sided Dickenson was sidelined in pre-season.

Jack Ellis, meanwhile, is continuing to make progress ahead of his return from a hamstring injury.

There is a possibility the young Cumbrian defender could return next week.

“I think Harrogate [on February 4] will be the earliest we could consider Jack,” said Simpson.

“He joined in the first part of the session [on Thursday], the warm-up and a simple passing drill, to get him integrated back in, then he went off with Chris [Brunskill, physio] and did some more fitness work.

“We’ll assess him and see whether he’s ok to join in with the rest of the group.

“With it being a matchday minus one we won’t do a hell of a lot [today], it’s whether or not he can join in that and do some extra.”

On Carlisle’s other injured players, the manager added: “Ryan Edmondson and Taylor Charters are still a long way from being involved with us.

“Scott Simons has had his surgery and he’s at the start of his recovery now. He’s quite a number of weeks away.

“We’ve just got to wait and see how they all go. Jack’s the closest to returning but certainly won’t be for Saturday or Tuesday I wouldn’t think.”
