A former Carlisle United player has been named alongside Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Vincent Kompany and Patrick Vieira on a list of football’s most influential black people.

Paul Nevin, who was part of Gareth Southgate’s England coaching team at the World Cup, is included in Football’s Black List for 2022.

Nevin is recognised for his coaching work both with England and West Ham United.

The man who played for the Blues in the 1991/2 season is one of five people recognised in the coaching and management section of the Black List.

Also included are Burnley boss Kompany and Crystal Palace manager Vieira, along with Birmingham City academy manager Danetta Powell and Liverpool junior coach Aubrey Rogers.

Some 42 people from across different areas of the game make up Football’s Black List, with Manchester United, Chelsea and England stars Rashford and Raheem Sterling among those recognised for their work off the pitch.

Football’s Black List list was founded by Leon Mann and Rodney Hinds in 2008, aimed at highlighting leaders working across all areas of the game from the black community.

A panel of experts from the football industry and black community submit votes, based on public nominations, that make up the overall list.

Leon Mann said: “We are delighted to be sharing another incredible and inspirational Football Black List.

“Black excellence shines so brightly in the game and this list underlines that.”

Nevin, 53, had a spell with the Blues in the 1991/2 season when they finished bottom of the entire Football League.

After joining Carlisle following a spell in the USA, former Shrewsbury man Nevin made eight appearances for Aidan McCaffery’s Cumbrians.

He then moved on to Yeovil Town before going on to have coaching spells with Fulham and in New Zealand and Qatar, and then followed a stint at Norwich City with roles at the Football Association.

He joined West Ham in 2020 and has had repeated spells with Southgate’s England set-up, including at last year’s Qatar World Cup when the Three Lions reached the quarter-finals.
