Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of one of the most crucial moments in Carlisle United's recent history - the return of Paul Simpson as manager.

It is 12 months since Simmo dramatically rejoined his home-city club, saving them from relegation before leading them on a promotion push this season.

We asked United supporters to sum up their feelings about Simpson's first year back at Brunton Park - and they responded in their droves on social media.

Here is a selection of their comments.

Beyond our wildest dreams. It's been an amazing turnaround and turned a struggling squad into one that is solid and with growing belief. I look at Scunthorpe and Oldham struggling in the National League and think that could have been us! (@CowellLes1975)

What Simmo has achieved in only 12 months has to be applauded. Before he arrived, the club was almost tipping over into the abyss (of non-league football). Not only on the field but off it, the whole club is transformed - hopefully we will get promotion then onwards, upwards (@Sallypb2)

Not only has Paul Simpson transformed the quality of performance and the sense of unity around the club but he has also given us a welcome reminder of the potential for where Carlisle United could be after too many years of under-achievement and tolerating mediocrity (or worse). (@johnknape74)

Miracle - no other manager could have turned things round like he has. Still on a small budget as well, very lucky to have him and Carlisle fans know that. Far too good for this level...enjoy him, back him and the club and see where it takes us (@Ga55rthGaz)

No other mortal could turn that team - no confidence, second bottom and lowest scorers in the league. Then six wins from his first seven games saved us. He's reconnected the club and the fans, we're now genuine promotion contenders and League Two top scorers. The man is simply a gift from God!!! (@leej1976)

The best 12 months following the Blues in a long long time. (@cufcmike)

An honest humble professional with a plan for our club. His reputation for improving young talent and winning promotion attracts quality players and sets turnstiles spinning. His history with Carlisle as native, fan, player and winning manager is everything the previous regime lacked (@JHallHDI)

He's bridged a divide and brought hope. You can really feel that connection between the football club and the fans and the city. It's like football from decades past - the club feels like it's once more at the heart of the community. Everyone is proud of this great old club again. (@BackoSkiddaw)

Have to give Nixon, Jenkins and co a lot of credit for getting Simpson in. Without them doing it, we would be non-league for sure. (@dawsonna)

From utter despair to a promotion push is unreal. The job Simpson did last season was immense and somehow he’s topped it this season. A manager and club that were made for each other, and what joy he brings to us fans. (@havenmarra)

I dont think any Blues fan will ever forget that Swindon game - the depths of despair were reached. Simmo has unified and reignited the Carlisle United flame, both on the pitch and off. Kids in Blues strips, the Warwick Road End, and third in League Two...we're proud Cumbrians (@matty017)

Simmo inspired me to buy my first season ticket, but the day I bought it he moved to Preston! I have had my season ticket in the Paddock since but that 0-3 Swindon game was the first time I thought I wasn't going to renew it. I couldn't see any recovery at that point. Simmo was the rabbit out if the hat. (@tomtuc001)

From minute one down at Orient that weekend, it’s been superb! Unbelievable transformation! (@ScottBeeby1)

Regardless of the impressive results on the pitch, the biggest positive is that the connection between the fans and the club has been restored, by and large. The growing number of young fans at Brunton Park is not to be sniffed at and the club needs to do everything in its power to harness that! (@Halpinforpope)

Back to the Future for our club? Well let's hope so...Paul has added so much more to his managerial hand book since he was here last time, and his laid back, no BS communication style has given fans belief again, plus the players have bought in. Result? A winning team! Superb (@LindaNi121202)

Astounding! He instantly reconnected us to the club. Joy, hope, enjoyment and excitement has returned. He gets us and the city. Who knows what will happen but I'm happy to be sharing the ride with him and the team and the club. (@WinderAsInMere)

Others have covered it, but Swindon was probably my lowest point in 35 years of following United. Everything about the club seemed hopeless and footballing oblivion beckoned. The only thing I'll give the ownership credit for is reacting and getting Paul Simpson, he saved the club. (@devoforstevo)

Give him the keys to the city (@teddymcready01)

While walking away after Swindon rout I was thinking, as most United fans no doubt were, 'That's it, were going into oblivion, we're finished'. After supporting Blues for 65 years I thought, 'This can't happen'. And then thankfully a knight in shining armour landed. Thank god for Simmo he came (@ericgreen866)

Epic. He gets the club, he understands the fan base, he gets the city and has Cumbrians in the team who also get it. Also comes across as a true professional. Has recruited well both on and off the pitch. Leads by example. (@Snakeeyes7475)

Nothing short of miraculous. Pre-Simmo - rudderless relegation favourites, despondency, anger, toxicity, Holdsworth. Post-Simmo - promotion contenders, excitement, pride, hope, influx of young fans, no Holdsworth. (@mlgraham73)

Transformational. He’s turned a team that was heading to the Vonference to a team challenging for promotion. Not only that he’s returned the feel good factor to the club generally. Amazing 12 months. (@mattselliott)

Last year I went to Salford and thought that was us down, then Oldham...wow, what a game, couldn’t have been more different. I knew then this would change (@phil_walker)

A restoration of proper values leading to a resurrection of football fortunes and civic pride in abundance. (@DaveScott1977)

Regardless of where we end up I’ve loved this last 12 months and never been to as many games! Oldham away was unbelievable! My two Citeh fan kids are hooked for life thanks to the Simmo effect! (@mancumbrianmike)

If Carlsberg did football managers... (@PadleyShane)

Pinch-me wonderful...what Carlisle and Paul Simpson somehow deserve. (@HOMESofFOOTBALL)

Staying in the Football League was pivotal - we wouldn't have come back up. Simmo's rebuilding the club, give him time. Hopefully Henderson and Branthwaite get sold in summer and we get enough money through sell-on clauses to pay the Purepay debt off - get that away and put club up for sale (@gunnersmad81)

Regenerative (EarnThtDanegeld)

Miracle. Swindon game I genuinely thought we were going down, jump to Oldham away and felt we could beat anyone. Then this season has just been one like we haven’t seen before, Denno top scorer, the squad depth, players like Gordon coming on loan. Miracle work from Simmo! (@CU04_YOUTUBE)

It's a shame Simmo was not approached earlier. His appointment has been an inspiration and has given the fans and the city a big boost. Simmo has a vast experience in football and knows how to motivate players so fingers crossed for more good times. (@peterjo91525330)

Biblical (@tomjardine_)

From the pits of despair to 12 months later feeling like were reliving the 2005/06 season again! Simmo is god! (@Alex_Jordan85)

We must allow Simmo to rebuild our football club, it's as simple as that. We just need new owners willing to invest in the club and not sit back and enjoy their Gentleman's Saturday Club. (@LEEROTHERHAM)

He's done alright... (RonnieSmith1964)

It’s been the nicest year of being a Carlisle fan for years 'cause of how lovely and good Paul Simpson is (@RobMorley_)

Magical (@Leojohns05)

Outstanding and somehow I had total confidence from day one that he’d turn things around. 100% support (@KolekChris)

Gets us, gets them, gets it. Taken the heat off the BOD after appointing him. BS free zone. Brought the love back to lots of us who, after many years, had tired of just getting less than acceptable. Future Nobel Prize Winner. (@ReiverPhil)

I think Paul Simpson's first 12 months has proved what a difference a good manager can make. I used to think that some managers are unlucky to get sacked when it's the players who flop on the pitch. Paul Simpson came in and with exactly the same players he turned the season around and we pulled away from relegation. Then, along with Greg Abbott, he recruited a hand picked squad and look at us now. A good manager makes a difference! (Martin Herbert Oates)

He saved us from potentially going under. I honestly don’t think the club would have survived the national league in the state we were in 1 year ago. The fans owe him a lot!! (Andrew Graham)

Paul Simpson is a Cumbrian, simple as. He knows what this club means to our city. 12 months of hard graft to get this club up and running again. Gates are up and the fans have returned. (Avril Richards)

Unbelievable progress and massively exceeded expectations. I would have takenyour hand off for a top ten finish at the start of the season. Mid-table stability was my realistic aim as we made gradual progress after nearly dropping into oblivion last year. One of the big things off the pitch though is putting pride back in the shirt for supporters, getting young fans back in and inspiring the next generation of CUFC fans. (Mark Whitfield)

We were on our way out of the Football League exactly a year ago. The only way the club can progress is for the fans, board players and manager to be pulling in the same direction. With Simmo at the helm we have an outstanding manager who has the best interest of the club at heart and more importantly someone that the fans will back and rarely question his decisions. Possibly the best managerial appointment we could have ever made at that time. (Chris Gibson)

In Simmo we trust. It’s no coincidence why we’re sitting in third. We have a top manager, and I wouldn’t bet against him promoting the Blues. A proud Carlisle-born manager who almost single handedly transformed a dying club into a club every Carlisle supporter can be hugely proud of again. What a transformation from the infamous 3-0 awful Swindon game 12 months ago, which let’s be honest nearly every Blues fan feared was the final knell in United's season, even their existence in the Football League and probable demise altogether. Words cannot express what Paul Simpson has managed to do in just 12 months in charge. We have our club back our identity back and we’re proud Carlisle fans once again with a brighter future and long may it last. And huge credit to Greg Abbott and the rest of the staff for compliementing Simmo (Ian Sanderson)

I don't think any words will do this man justice, the guy is simply a legend, the buzz around the club is unbelievable and to be where we are 12 months on is simply a miracle!! (Darren Wilson)

I think that the reaction after the Mansfield game summed it up. We all knew that the first half was terrible, but we kept the faith and knew that there would be a positive reaction. Just imagine what it would have been like 12 months ago. (Alan Sayer)

Build his statue now (Mikey Davidson)

Never seen a manager have such an effect on a team (James Usher)

I can well imagine that being 'The Gaffer' can be an extremely lonely job. Recent managers have almost exclusively been guided by their own interpretation of what they think is right, and quite often they have had nowhere to turn to for advice when teams are under-performing. Carlisle now has an experienced first team manager, who understands the value of quality scouting, has also been involved in coaching as an assistant manager at club level in the Championship and led the England Under 20s to success; this is his 'X-Factor'. He knows things others don't. His experience and knowledge is coming to the fore at the right time. He has outstanding communication skills and, when the going gets tough, this is invaluable in steadying the ship and generating self belief. The current Carlisle United team now trust in their own individual ability and, just as importantly they believe in their collective talent. A ten year extension to his contract at the end of this season seems reasonable enough to me. (Jim White)

Keep up the good work Paul (Mary Campbell)

When you employ a qualified person for the job with proven experience. You get results in any job. Buy cheap take the consequences (John Hirst-jeff)

Legend (John Marland)

He saved us from potentially going under. I honestly don’t think the club would have survived the national league in the state we were in one year ago. The fans owe him a lot!! (Andrew Graham)
