League Two strugglers Hartlepool United have appointed John Askey to replace Keith Curle as manager.

The former York City boss has replaced ex-Carlisle United man Curle at the helm amid their fight for EFL survival.

Askey's arrival came a day after Curle and his assistant Colin West were dismissed by the Monkey Hangers.

The 58-year-old is now charged with leading the north east club out of danger near the foot of League Two.

Askey, who was surprisingly sacked by National League club York in November, has also managed Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town and Macclesfield Town.

He is being joined by assistant manager Mark Goodlad, while former Carlisle midfielder Antony Sweeney will remain as first-team coach at third-bottom Pools.

Hartlepool chairman Raj Singh said in a statement: "We had to move very quickly to find out who was available and ready to come in immediately given the challenge ahead.

"I would like to welcome John and Mark to the club and wish them the best of luck in trying to retain our league status.

"A couple of people have pointed out to me that John was very popular with York fans. In fact, the majority of them would like to have him back.

"For me, that is always a good sign and here’s to hoping that he is just as popular and liked as much by our fans in the time ahead."

Askey said it was an "exciting project" and asked fans to stick with the club and back the players.

Curle was axed after Tuesday night's 1-0 defeat to Newport County which left Poolsleft Hartlepool a point above the drop zone but having played four games more than second-bottom Crawley Town.

Askey is the club's third manager of the season following Curle and his predecessor Paul Hartley.
