Carlisle United slipped back down to third place after a night of goals and drama in League Two.
Stevenage won a five-goal encounter at AFC Wimbledon to move back into second.
A late Luke Norris goal earned Steve Evans' side a 3-2 victory at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
Stevenage are now two points above the Blues with a game in hand.
They had fallen behind to an Ali Al-Hamadi first-half goal before overturning the deficit through Carl Piergianni and a Kasey McAteer own-goal after the break.
Al-Hamadi levelled for the Dons before Norris struck in the 83rd minute to give Stevenage a first win in six league games.
Among other promotion rivals in action on Tuesday night, Northampton Town failed to go level on points with Carlisle as they were held at struggling Harrogate Town.
The fourth-placed Cobblers took the lead early in the second half through Mitch Pinnock but a Luke Armstrong equaliser a minute later for the fourth-bottom hosts saw things end 1-1 at the EnviroVent Stadium.
Northampton are two points behind Carlisle having now played the same number of games.
Bradford City moved up to sixth after a 2-0 win at fifth-bottom Gillingham in which ex-Blues man Andy Cook continued his impressive scoring run.
Cook doubled the Bantams’ margin at Priestfield after a Richie Smallwood opener.
The striker has scored five goals in his last six games, and 21 in all competitions this season, for Mark Hughes’ side, who are four points behind Carlisle with a game in hand.
They moved in front of Salford City after the Ammies were pegged back at Barrow.
Ryan Watson’s 12th-minute penalty gave Salford the lead but a Theo Vassell own-goal 20 minutes from time left Neil Wood’s side seventh, five points adrift of the Cumbrians having played a game more.
Barrow are 11th, five points outside the play-off places.
The night’s other game in the division saw Crawley Town’s relegation worries deepen with another defeat.
They went down 1-0 at Tranmere Rovers for whom Jordan Turnbull struck the only goal.
Crawley are second bottom by two points, with three games in hand on third-bottom Hartlepool United, while Tranmere are now 12th.
Carlisle return to action with the visit of Grimsby Town on Saturday.
