Cumbrian swimming star Luke Greenbank has missed out on selection for this year’s World Championships.
The double Olympic medallist from Cockermouth has not been included in the 29-strong team for the competition in Japan.
Greenbank won two bronze medals at last week’s British Championships, but saw rivals preferred in the backstroke events.
Oliver Morgan, Brodie Williams and Cameron Brooker, who finished ahead of Greenbank on the podium in the men’s 100m and 200m backstroke events in Sheffield, have instead got the nod.
The World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, this July, come a year ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Five of the 29-strong squad earned selection after winning respective races at the national championships and also achieving the necessary qualifying time.
The remaining 24 were picked at the discretion of British Swimming performance director Chris Spice, with a statement saying the criteria was based on the need to qualify as many relay teams as possible for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games; provision of relay cover and alternates to rest key athletes with large schedules; potential to make the Paris 2024 Olympic team; individual performances over the last 12 months and performances at the 2023 British Swimming Championships.
Spice said: "We were really pleased with the standard of our athletes' performances at the British Championships, with established names and new faces delivering big swims and helping play their part in some outstanding races.
"The way that our female athletes are moving things on is also reflected in this team - Freya Anderson and Laura Stephens are just two more experienced performers who delivered eye-catching personal bests last week and will be looking to build again into the summer.
"As with every year, our swimmers and coaches will now put those performances behind them and focus on what they can do between now and the summer to ensure they can deliver a season's best when it matters most.”
