Former Carlisle United star Clint Hill has emerged as the new odds-on favourite for the Tranmere Rovers job.
Hill, assistant boss to Dave Challinor at Stockport County, has seen his odds cut to 1/2 by BetVictor for the Prenton Park post.
Hill has overtaken Karl Robinson as the bookies' pick for the job following Tranmere's sacking of Micky Mellon last month.
The 44-year-old has plenty of history with the Wirral club having come through the youth ranks at Tranmere and made 160 first-team appearances.
Having launched his career with the Birkenhead outfit, Hill went on to play for Oldham Athletic, Stoke City, Crystal Palace, QPR, Nottingham Forest and Rangers before ending his playing career at Carlisle in the 2017/18 season.
He made 42 appearances for the Cumbrians under Keith Curle, and was named player of the season as his vast experience shone in the Blues' defence.
Tranmere are currently led by caretaker boss Ian Dawes, with the club 13th in League Two with three games to go.
Hill was back at Brunton Park on Tuesday night for Stockport's 2-2 draw with his former club Carlisle.
Other contenders for the Tranmere job according to the bookmakers include ex-Crewe boss David Artell and Swansea City coach Matthew Gill, who are both 8/1.
Ex-United figures among the more distant contenders include John Sheridan and Chris Beech at 66/1
