This was the moment Cumbrian football fans united to salute Nick Anderton.
Supporters of Barrow AFC and Carlisle United joined in a minute’s applause for the player who is fighting cancer.
On Friday Anderton - the day before his 27th birthday - had announced his retirement.
Barrow then invited all supporters at the Cumbrian derby at Holker Street the following day to join in a 27th-minute tribute to the player who had represented both clubs.
Following an announcement over the PA system, fans in the 4,515 crowd, including 640 travelling Carlisle fans, applauded for Anderton.
The man who played for Barrow in three spells from 2014-17, and captained United from 2020-21, is undergoing treatment for osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
He underwent surgery to remove a tumour from his right femur last year and was then informed the cancerous cells had been more aggressive than first hoped, leading to a course of chemotherapy which is ongoing.
Anderton said the nature of the surgery on his right leg meant he was unable to continue playing.
The Lancashire-based player said he was “at peace” with his decision and issued thanks for the huge amount of support he has received.
