Paul Simpson admits football chat will be off the agenda this week when he speaks to son Jake.

That’s because they will be on opposite sides at Wembley in the League Two play-off final.

Manager Simpson’s Carlisle United will go head to head with a Stockport County team where Jake is head of performance.

It means Sunday’s showdown for the right to reach League One is also a Simpson family affair.

United’s manager admitted it was not an ideal scenario for them to be on opposite sides on such a big occasion - but said he was proud of his son's career with United's rivals regardless.

The Blues boss, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “It’s gonna be tough, it’s gonna be a tough family occasion…

“But I’m really proud of him with what he’s done with Stockport.

“We haven’t had much contact for the last four weeks about football. Wwe’ve had lots of family chat but not football.

“It will be the same again this week...”

Jake has been in Dave Challinor’s backroom staff at Stockport since January last year, following a spell at Hartlepool United.

The 32-year-old has previously worked at Carlisle United and also played for the Blues’ youth team – as well as under his father at Shrewsbury Town during Jake’s spell as a professional.

Also a former Workington Reds player, he has been on the winning side against the Blues with Stockport already this season.

The Hatters were 2-0 winners over United in League Two back in October at Edgeley Park, while the teams drew 2-2 at Brunton Park in April.
