AN AIKIDO seminar is set to take place this weekend at St Bees school.

The martial arts event will be held in St Bees school, with sessions on the evening of Friday, June 16, and over the following weekend, Saturday, June 17, and Sunday, June 18.

Aikido is a not very well-known sport and form of martial arts, but it is used frequently by Steven Segal in his films and by Morgan in The Walking Dead.

At the seminars, hand-to-hand contact is practiced and the participants work with traditional wooden Japanese weapons such as a bokken and jo.

This seminar is the second mid-summer event for West Cumbria Aikido and will feature Sensei Lewis Bernaldo de Quiros, sixth Dan Aikikai, Aikikai Shihan, and direct student of Morihiro Saito Sensei.

They said: "Adrian Punt, our trainer, and organiser, has worked tirelessly to establish and promote West Cumbria Aikido and is very excited to welcome 50 participants from around the country including some international guests for this weekend's seminar."
