Cumbria's first cricket league for girls will launch this Sunday at Burneside Cricket Club in Kendal.
Just days after the men's Ashes began at Edgbaston and days before the women's Ashes begin at Trent Bridge, girls in Cumbria will finally be given the chance to play in a competitive league, thanks in part to the funding of Fibrus Broadband.
Fibrus, which is responsible for providing the wifi for around 60,000 homes across Cumbria, was awarded the Project Gigabit contract for Cumbria in November 2022.
They worked alongside Cumbria Cricket to develop the new league, which will see teams such as the Eden Eagles, the Central Sixers, the Southern Power Team and Sedbergh School all compete at the event on Sunday, June 18.
The fifth and final team Western Boom, which will include players from Cockermouth, Egremont, Workington and Whitehaven, represent the other founding member of the league.
The Fibrus 100 League includes teams at U13 and U16 levels covering the whole of Cumbria and comes as a result of the recent rapid growth in women’s cricket fueled by the success of the national team, a professional English league, and increasing coverage by major broadcasters.
Sunday's event at Burneside is set to begin at 10:30am with a welcome before the first match gets underway at 11.
This is followed by lunch, second matches at 1:30pm and a closing presentation at 3:30pm, on what promises to be another beautiful day for cricket in Cumbria.
