Paul Simpson has confirmed that Carlisle United are in talks about extending the deals of certain players.
The manager said negotiations were taking place with members of the existing squad at the same time as United are trying to make more signings.
Simpson expressed his hope that Carlisle could reach agreement with those players he wants to tie to the club for longer.
United’s boss did not name any of the players in talks, as he responded to a fan’s question at this week’s forum.
The supporter quipped that the club should be offering midfield star Owen Moxon a five-year deal.
Simpson replied: “Like we’re in the process of trying to sign players, we’re also talking to players about extending contracts, and hopefully we’ll be able to get something sorted.”
Moxon is widely regarded as United’s prized asset after his brilliant first season in the EFL with his home-city club.
He has a year left on the two-year deal he signed when joining from Annan Athletic last summer.
The Denton Holme star has been the subject of speculation over summer interest from other clubs.
Simpson, though, said United have not received any approaches or offers for any of their under-contract stars so far.
“No. That’s all I need to say. No, there hasn’t been,” Simpson said, when asked if Carlisle had fielded any enquiries.
Carlisle have four members of the first-team squad who are entering the last year of two-year deals and whose contracts have not been updated in recent times.
They are Moxon, Tomas Holy, Ryan Edmondson and Jack Ellis.
Joe Garner, who joined from Fleetwood Town in January, also has a year to run on the 18-month deal he signed.
Players on one-year deals which have been triggered or awarded in the recent past include Paul Huntington, Jon Mellish, Jordan Gibson, Corey Whelan, Max Kilsby, Gabe Breeze and Kai Nugent.
Those on longer terms are Jack Armer – under contract until 2026 – plus Callum Guy, Jayden Harris, Taylor Charters and new signings Jack Robinson and Alfie McCalmont, who are under contract until 2025.
Out of contract pair Omari Patrick and Morgan Feeney are expected to leave the club, Simpson said this week.
